What is a Nanny?

Many of the enquiries we receive ask us to find them a nanny but when the enquirer begins to describe the job to us it becomes apparent that what they are really looking for is a nanny/maid. So, what is the difference?

nanny and baby

What is a Nanny?

A nanny is a person whose primary and sometimes only function is caring for the children and everything in the house affected by the children.

A “nanny” is not really there to care for the parents, or to make beds or do the laundry or scrub bathrooms, clean the windows, etc. Some nannies will happily agree to help out around the house but their focus will be the children.

Any role that includes some or all of the above is really a nanny/maid job. Your nanny will typically work 10-12 hours per day Monday – Friday, Monday – Saturday half day or Monday – Saturday full day. This applies to live-out nannies as well as to live-in. Many will be open to working additional hours for extra pay, even their day off can become a working day with additional salary for many of the girls.

Your nanny might be young or mature or in between. She will have previous experience in a similar role, she may have certificates of achievement, or both.

She might be short or tall, thin or heavy, quiet or talkative. She will likely be from a religious background and may or may not be artistically or Family otherwise talented. In fact, there will be many things that will make your nanny special to your family and we will work hard to find a Nanny that is “right” for your family.

A nanny that is right for your family though may be quite wrong for someone else - and vice versa so at P.N.A we believe that matching is the key to a successful placement and with over 20 years experience already under our belts we can think of nobody better placed than Khun Nitiporn herself to find that special nanny for you.

So, you can expect your nanny will care for your children and depending on the ages of the kids that care might include infant and/or toddler care, creative activities, scheduling and encouraging play dates, attending classroom activities, reading books (with or to the children), helping with homework, accompanying them to and from school as well as to some after school activities.

What is a Nanny/Maid?

A nanny/maid will work with the family as the nanny as well as the housekeeper and her responsibilities will include laundry, cleaning, ironing and even shopping and bill paying if required.

Nanny/maids will typically work with families where the children are 2 years of age or more and are attending school or - if they are still babies/infants - where the mother is a stay-at-home mum.

She will be accustomed to working her day around the childrens schedule in addition to keeping the home tidy and clean and supporting the whole family with her laundry and ironing skills too.

So, just to recap -

A nanny is there to care for your children. Depending on the ages of the kids that might include loving, nurturing, infant and toddler care maid service, creative activities, scheduling and encouraging play dates, attending story hours, reading books (with or to the children), helping with homework, travelling to and from after school activities, even encouraging and supporting the kids in those activities etc. The list goes on. There is no finite description of what a nanny is, but there is as noted here a description of what a nanny is not.

Fulfilling a housekeeping role as well as being a nanny - and maybe cook - and also asking/expecting many other things from your nanny or nanny/maid means that she may become very tired and maybe even fall ill over time.

She certainly will not be able to provide nurturing, quality, gentle, competent childcare though – it simply is not possible in an environment like that. At P.N.A we try to differenciate between the roles to avoid disharmony and disruption so I am afraid that we do not accept such job descriptions nor do we place such individuals.

We do however place nannies, maids, cooks, mothers helps, caregivers and personal drivers who are, wherever possible, professionally screened and referenced and then carefully matched to an employer.

This might be a reason for us succeeding in an official capacity since 1991. It might also explain why our placements last longer on average than any other agency in Thailand and why nannies and clients alike prefer to come to work with us.
